On a blustery and chilly morning, Whitchurch won the toss and elected to field. Old Basing set about business straight away, with their strongest batters using the pace of the ball and fast out field to score at a rapid rate. Their opener, ES scoring 35 off just 20 balls.
Oscar I and Wilf were in the wickets and gradually the run rate came down as less experienced players came to the crease. Jonny bowled well and was unlucky on a couple of occasions. Despite this, Old Basing reached an imposing total of 165 with 66 coming as extras.
After a short break, Whitchurch Blues came in with hope but were rattled by some excellent bowling from Old Basing. Our top four batters out with the score below 20. It looked like being a short first match of the season; the first in which our teams have moved to standard (not pairs) rules. However, Sam S came to the season and steadied the ship with some lovely shots and good calling. He was Joined by Felix C who timed the ball well. Joe batted sensibly and Dillon, on debut scored a four with his first shot in competitive cricket.
At one point it looked like Whitchurch might not make it to 10 overs, but they were eventually dismissed with only two balls remaining, for a total of 123. Very respectable considering the challenge.
The spirit of cricket award was shared between Sam (outstanding effort in the field and top scoring with the bat) and Dillon (great fielding on debut and valuable runs at the end)!
As the match wrapped up it became apparent that the yellow team were short a player for their match straight afterwards. It spoke volumes that almost all Blues players put their hand up to play again.
Old Basing were deserved winners, but despite the defeat, a very positive start to the season!
