Practice, work hard, practice more, work harder, play as a team.
That has been the mantra that has seen the u15s through the hardest season they have faced in several years as the team has battled towards a first league win of the season.
No more true was this than on a scorching afternoon at Parsonage Meadow with the sun beating down and an outfield resembling the surface of Mars. Losing the toss and being asked to bowl WCC were up against it from the outset with the Longparish top order putting bat to ball and flying to 105-1 after 10 overs. A clever wicket from Zach doing little to slow the scoring.
The drinks break enabled the reset that WCC needed and a stellar fielding performance followed with the final 10 overs going for a miserly 55 runs. WCC fielders flying everywhere, Eil, Will, Hugo using all manner of body parts to intercept the ball. A wicket a piece for Will and Gregory. Special mention for makeshift wicket keepers Greg and Benji who stepped in with no recognised WK in the team of nine.
160-3. An imposing total, but not our of sight. Could WCC chase it down?.....
WCC's openers Zach and Ben strode to the crease. Culture Club and the Worzels, both chart toppers, you work out which is which. A fabulous opening partnership followed. Caressed boundaries, bludgeoned boundaries, and the best running between the wickets we have seen in youth cricket. One became two time after time. With the score on 81 Zach chipped to short cover for 34 and Ben retired not out on 38 in the same over.
Benji and Gethin then consolidated after Greg batting three was deceived by a sneaky slower ball until Benji was undone by one that kept low for 17.
117/3. Run rate starting to climb and the game still in the balance.
Lucas strode in to bat, no 80s pop references for WCC's number 7, more Gustav Holtz. Step, hit, repeat. Seven fours, 31 not out, game done with 10 balls to go.
A real triumph for team spirt.
The mighty WCC move up to sixth after Sparsholt's concession last time out.
I've got a brand new combine harvester, I'll give you the key.
