Monday saw the Under 11 Mixed team play host the final of The Northern Region Cup.
In contrast to league matches, the Cup is played in pairs format (8-a-side, players batting in a pair with each pair facing four overs. Both teams start on 200 runs. Runs are scored normally, and if a player is out, they continue batting but the team lose five runs from their score).
WCC captain Oscar won the toss and asked Frensham to bat. The possibility of a wet ball in the second innings making his mind up and the plan worked. Fred bowling their opening batsmen with the very first ball of the match. He was well supported by Oscar taking three wickets in his opening burst, all clean bowled.
The next Frensham pair faced Percy who, with a fast-lifting delivery, saw James take a truly epic diving catch as wicket keeper. Not only saving a certain 4 runs but also taking a wicket and costing Frensham 5 runs. Percy was brilliantly supported by Lewis who was causing all sorts of trouble and was very unlucky not to have two hard catches taken.
Third change. Ruby's pace and bounce saw a catch taken by Oscar at cover and Wilf with his skiddy action pushing one through the defences of his opponent. A wicket each and the scoreboard barely moving.
Final Frensham pair (their big hitters) faced Ethan supported by Lewis and Wilf . What a performance from Ethan, two overs, one maiden, one wicket, two runs. Bowling as quickly as he ever has and well supported by Lewis and Wilf.
Innings closed. Frensham having mustered a score of 237 (net 37). Was it enough...Nearly!
Frensham's bowling attack was the best we have seen all season. Lewis and Ethan opening the batting with the clouds gathering. In a mirror image of the first innings, Frensham struck with a stunning first ball. But Lewis and Ethan kept calm and built a vital score.
Then the rain came but it also went. But it made the ball slippery and the outfield very slow.
Second pair Oscar and James set about their task well. Despite losing a wicket they struck some crucial boundaries and finished their innings with WCC just in the "lead". Third pair Ruby and Wilf to the crease. Defend or attack? Attack! Clean striking from both batters with some massive boundaries despite the wet outfield meaning that even with a couple of wickets falling WCC were now 14 ahead.
Now for the final innings. Percy and Fred into against Frenshams's best bowlers coming back to try to win for Frensham. Defend and keep wickets intact or risk an attack to put the game out of sight? The decision was taken for them when a wicket fell first ball. Heads down, block, take the easy runs. After one more wicket fell the boys defended (2 maiden overs) to see WCC over the line. A win by 17 runs and a first knockout cup for the WCC youth section since if reformed in 2020.
Presentations followed, with the Hampshire Cricket Board official praising the spirit of both teams and the neutral umpires selecting WCC's Oscar as a well-deserved player of the match. We would like to thank Frensham for making the long journey and playing the game in a brilliant spirit ensuring the final was a fun, friendly and yet very competitive and exciting match.
Thank you to all the parents, families, friends, teammates and U15 players (who have helped coach the U11s) for coming to support. Also, to Nine Points for their sponsorship and the coaches for all their hard work.
Huge congratulations to the team!
